Friday 27th had us on the road to Wexford to open our Cup campaign.
Wexford looked big and strong with a couple of danger men spread across the team. The game started at a frantic pace, with a few forced passes and tackling radars seeming a little off, but intent and effort certainly wasn't, as shown by Ronan having to put 3 good hits on their big centre before getting him down.
Sam's 7 pressure, gave us a 22 scrum, a well worked backs move later and Andrew took his try well on 8 mins. 7-0
On our 22 a big Hugh tackle spilled the ball and Tom did his 80 m speciality. 14-0 .16 mins played.
To end the half, Ronan had a big run with a nice offload leading to another hungry carry from the very busy Darragh winning a penalty. The move was well timed, Hugh taking the ball at pace and carrying hard to score. 21-0
The second half started of a little messy, again forcing passes, a confusing yellow for Hugh seemed to get us focused again.
Sam and Eoin put in a couple of big tackles to turnover the ball, Zach going very close after running one of his many great support lines of the evening.
A close range scrum on 11 mins and Eoin scored off the base. 26-0
A scrum in the middle of the pitch saw Andrew make great ground, quick ruck ball picked by Thomas to score. 31-0.
Ben had a great game, producing a beaut of a pass on 18 mins to unleash Thomas on another big lung busting run. 38-0.
Wexford got a bit of a purple patch in the last few mins, but heroic defensive efforts by the pack in particular turned the tide, with Hugh and Thomas making good carries with Charlie in support to score. 45-0
Wexford got back deep into our 22, our defence to a man, made them work very hard for their late try deep into extra time.
Full time 45-5.
Some brilliant rugby played tonight by the team, our off loads and support game really doing damage when its firing, and our moves really starting to click.
Harry had a good day off the tee.
Many great performances out there this evening but Man of the Match had to be shared this week ...
Hugh did all his usual stuff but the nice hands and massive goal line defence stood out.
Zach did everything but score, he tackled everything, carried dangerously, but his work off the ball in support and defence, was immense.
Up next, a mid week trip to kilkenny, and Dundalk come to town in a top of the league clash at the weekend
