Our U13 Boys took to the field yesterday for a big milestone, their very first game of youths rugby, taking on New Ross in the South East League.

Understandably, Gorey started a little nervously as the lads adjusted to the new format and the step up to a full-size pitch. New Ross took advantage, crossing for an early try and making it clear they weren’t there to make up the numbers.

The Gorey lads soon settled, rolled up their sleeves and got down to business. Eoin Carter had the honour of scoring the team’s first-ever try at youths grade rugby.

Not long afterwards, Luke Doyle intercepted as New Ross attempted to clear their lines. A trademark supporting run from Tim Butler saw him finish the move and dot down under the posts.

New Ross weren’t finished, however, and hit back with another score to leave the sides level at 12–12 at half-time.

Gorey emptied the bench in the second half, bringing on a “bomb squad” of impact players who made their presence felt. Sharp passing from Tom Keane and Asher Kavanagh Horan, a crunching tackle from Donncha O’Neill, and powerful runs from MJ Doyle and Ross Swaine all helped turn the momentum Gorey’s way, eventually leading to the decisive try.

Ted Kelly added two conversions over the course of the game to help seal a 19–12 victory.

Congratulations to the lads on winning their first game at youths level, and well done to a determined New Ross side who contributed to a great contest.
