Gorey U18.5s welcomed Boyne today in the Tom Darcy Cup with a 12pm KO played in wet conditions and a slight breeze 🌧️💨
The game wasn’t five minutes old when Robin Sunderland powered over for the opening score, giving Gorey an early 5–0 lead. From there, Gorey spent long periods camped in the Boyne half and were unlucky not to add two more tries, with the greasy ball slipping at crucial moments.
On the wings, Harry Darcy and birthday boy Daithi Robinson made some excellent attacking runs to keep Boyne honest and stretch the defence. Boyne, to their credit, responded through their big, powerful forwards who repeatedly tested the Gorey defence up the middle. Notable performers for Boyne were Mathew Crocock and Olorunjuwon Adeoye, both fresh back from a week at the Leinster camp and hugely influential throughout.
Last-ditch tackles from the likes of Jack Doran ensured Gorey held their 0–5 advantage going into half-time.
The second half saw both sides go at it again, but handling errors proved costly for Boyne. Gorey moved the ball quickly out wide with slick passing, allowing Harry Darcy to go over for the second try. Rory Cooper found the tough conditions challenging from the tee — understandable given the miserable weather — leaving the score at 0–10.
Much of the game became a battle between the two 22s, with neither side making major inroads until a superb move from deep saw George Murphy hit a great attacking line to score the first of his two tries (0–15). Cooper then added a penalty to stretch the lead to 0–18.
Boyne kept coming with strong carries, but a dual Man of the Match performance from centres Damien Brennan and Robin Sunderland saw huge tackles go in and crucial turnovers won to halt any momentum. Murphy then finished in style, racing down the wing to touch down in the corner for his second of the day.
Notable contributions today also came from Harry Griffiths, Jack Doran, and Jack Sheehan, whose work rate and physicality were key throughout the contest.
A strong all-round squad performance sees Gorey advance to the Semi-Final of the Tom Darcy Cup, where they face current holders Wicklow RFC away in Wicklow — a tough test ahead 💚🏉
Well done to all the panel and management 🤍💙💚
