U 14 Boys Southeast Semi final win
Gorey 19-New Ross 7.
Sunday 14th Gorey HQ hosted the Semi on the main pitch in wet and windy conditions. The team were well fired up knowing the challenge ahead, having played New Ross a few weeks previously.
We started strong with the wind at our backs, strong carries and good kicking from hand, keeping us deep in Ross territory. Pressure produced a Ross infringement after 4 minutes and a tap-penalty move worked well, with Thomas crossing in the corner, then converting with a difficult long range kick. 7-0.
From the kickoff, Gorey immediately piled on the pressure and a promising attack kick went astray, New Ross pouncing on the loose ball to score a converted try well against the run of play. 7-7
More direct and dominant play from Gorey followed, New Ross frustrations leading to a yellow for a late high hit on Alex. Gorey capitalised on the man advantage, piling on the pressure and with 5 remaining in the half, were rewarded when a Paddy claimed a loose ball to crash over under the post, Alex converting to make it. 14-7.
Gorey kept their foot firmly on the throttle for the remainder of the half, tackling and rucking hard, with that word again...pressure, paying rewards. A lovely phase of play finished the half, involving nearly every man from one touchline to the other and back, with the boys cleverly using short passes and quick hands to suit the conditions. Paddy spotted the overlap and drew his man perfectly, allowing fullback Zach an easy stroll over the whitewash untouched. 19-7.
Playing into the wind for the 2nd half, Gorey kept up the dominant display in all areas, but just couldn't manufacture any real chances. Apart from one passage where Gorey spilled the ball backwards a few times, Ross got no joy either, frustrations leading to further acts of indiscipline and another yellow card. Gorey proudly kept their heads and discipline throughout.
Andrew kicked the ball dead to end the half scoreless and the game. 19-7.
Not fully shown by the scoreboard, it was a dominant and honest display from the team, each man stepping up to the mark and working hard. The pack deserve special mention, putting in great scrummage and rucking performances, and the back 3 put in a busy shift, Thomas and Hugh had some big moments.
Man of the match this week goes to Paddy for taking on past learnings, stepping up to steer the ship at 10 when Alex had to retire and generally just doing what he does best.
Up next, a bit of an easy week before the Christmas break, then back at it for the South East Final scheduled for the 1st week of the New Year.
