Match Report- U15 Boys Leinster League v Enniscorthy

On Saturday 18th Gorey’s U15 boys kicked off their Leinster League campaign with a local derby for the ages in a very tightly contested and brutally physical game against neighbouring Enniscorthy RFC.

Gorey opened the scoring after only a little over two minutes as loose head Michael McGuiness powered over the line on the back of a dominant run from winger Ryan Kenny putting Gorey deep inside the Enniscorthy 22. (5-0)

Enniscorthy laid down a gauntlet with their ferocious defence and clinical rucking, turning over possession and answering back with their own score and conversion at the 8 minute mark. (5-7)

The physical onslaught from the visitors continued from the restart and with additional Gorey numbers committed to the battles at the ruck Enniscorthy found space around the fringes and broke through for another try in the corner. (5-12)

After more than fifteen minutes of heavy fire from both sides, with Gorey in possession and several phases of forward play, No.12 Aidan Brennan cut a fabulous line through the midfield and set winger Sam Gough away for the final score of the first half. (HT 10-12)

The second half opened at an even faster pace than the first, and with Gorey laying down their own physical marker from the restart, centre Aidan Brennan ran another crafty line, showing great mettle and breaking several tackles, he wasn’t to be stopped as he crossed the line after only 25 seconds of the half. (15-12)

Scrum-half Tyler Klopper kept the momentum in Gorey’s favour when he spotted space and took his opportunity to cross the line just minutes later. (20-12)

The forwards wanted just rewards for their dominance throughout the game and took it to the Enniscorthy pack with phase after phase of brutal but clinical carries which culminated in second row Hugh Sheriff crashing over to stretch the lead, with out-half Olly Syme tagging on the additional two from the conversion. (27-12)

The remaining minutes of the second half were not to disappoint, with fresh legs on from the bench and both teams determined to both attack and defend as though their lives depended on it. Enniscorthy found a half-gap and put away their big centre who was through for an almost certain try if it weren’t for the bone-crunching tackle put in by a very brave Finn O’Brien who was Gorey’s last resistance at fullback and stopped the man and the attack dead in their tracks.

With Gorey now under pressure in their own 22 and scrambling to defend, the timing couldn’t have been better for flanker Jimmy Collier to pull off one of his patented steals at the ruck and give the lads a bit of breathing room.

Not happy to simply kick for territory and sit on the points cushion, replacement scrum-half Ben Morris whipped the ball wide, fast hands from centre Adam saw Sam execute a blistering 60 metre sprint to dot the ball down under the sticks, with Olly doing the honours for the additional two points. (34-12)

Enniscorthy, to their credit, were not taking a backward step and hammered away at Gorey, ultimately crossing the line under the posts and converting with a drop kick that would be the final act of what was an end-to-end, all-action southeast derby certain to have entertained all in attendance. (FT 34-19)
