On Friday the 12th of September our U15 boys traveled to take on Tullow in the opening game of their Southeast League campaign.
It was a wet and blustery night under the lights in Tullow but the 4G surface promised some good running rugby, and we weren’t disappointed.
The opening passage saw Tullow advance into the Gorey half behind their kick off and win a penalty 10 meters out after Gorey were deemed to have gone off their feet at the ruck.
Tullow took it quickly and managed to go over for the first try of the game under the posts after only a minute and a half of play leaving an easy conversion for their number 10. (7-0)
After some very hard fought passages in the heavy rain Gorey answered back with a well worked try from Winger Sam Gough that was converted by out-half Olly Syme. (7-7)
Tullow capitalised on a greasy ball spilled in the midfield and played their advantage, setting their centre away through the open play and over the line under the posts with another two points added by the 10. (14-7)
Gorey answered back quickly and after turning over Tullow ball at the ruck and several phases of brutal forward carries Sam was set loose on the narrow side for his second try that was converted by Olly. (14-14)
At the sixteen minute mark Gorey number 8 Charlie Kennedy saw yellow after he was deemed to have tackled high and so Gorey were reduced to 14 men.
Gorey conceded a penalty 20 meters from their goal line that the Tullow 10 opted to slot over to give the home team a 17-14 lead.
After 23 minutes of high-paced play Gorey put on a handling clinic in the rain and after nearly all 14 remaining players handled the ball through multiple phases it was worked wide again to Sam who went over in the corner for his third try of the game leaving an awkward conversion for Olly who struck the kick beautifully to give Gorey a 21-17 lead at the half time break.
The second half saw wholesale changes in the Gorey line-up with every member of the panel being tasked with a job on the night. With 39 minutes gone Tullow crossed the chalk for their third try of the game but couldn’t convert. (22-21)
Both teams were locked in a stalemate for large parts of the second half with each giving as good as they were getting.
Finally towards the end of the second half Tullow went over under the posts again for the final try of the game which they converted to close out the game 29-21.
A great display of heart and skill put on by both sides, a Man Of The Match performance from Sam Gough aided by every member of the 23 man squad on the night, a performance to be proud of against the reigning Leinster Premier League and Southeast league Champions.
