Due to fixture congestion Gorey 13s have had to organise to play a couple of mid-week games. On Wednesday night, we travelled to the rearranged venue of Kilkenny College to face Kilkenny in the league playoffs.
Some traffic delays meant warm-up wasn't ideal, but Gorey started strong with a try disallowed by the Ref in the first moments of the game. A period of good Gorey pressure finally paid off at around 12 minutes, Gorey forwards taking a quick tap and some side to side play in the 22 and a nice kick in behind by out-half Alex for Zach to score with Oisin on target for the extras.
Towards the end of the half, Kilkenny came back strong. Gorey had to put in some heroic defence for a sustained period very close to their own line pushing Kilkenny back numerous times eventually winning the penalty. A huge kick into space from Oisin and 2nd row Jack Curley showed his pace to pressure and ultimately tackle the receiver deep in Kilkenny territory, a number of pick and go balls by the pack, especially Eoin and Ronan followed, and the try was well finished by Charlie, Oisin again on target.
Halftime 14-0.
Well into the 2nd half a clever swich by Alex seeing the hard line from Andrew to score in the corner, followed by a wonderful conversion from the sideline by Oisin who was in great form with the boot tonight. Kilkenny to their credit kept at it and were rewarded late in the game with an unconverted try.
Full time 21-5.
This weeks starting team again saw some rotation with more boys getting a chance to show their progress, and others returning to fitness or getting their chance tonight from the bench.
Some pleasing moments during tonight's game ..
The forwards got their "Jam" on and got some good return from it.
Jack Curley showed some of his inner 2nd row with a couple of big carries and rucks.
A note from our opposition coaches complimenting our team on how they played and conducted themselves through-out the game.
It was lovely and speaks well to our club and team spirit that former team members, Luke and Jamie and clubmates, Dylan and Charlie skipped study in KCK to come support the team, all of whom are looking great and getting on well in school.
Special mention to Eoin for his carries and work in rucks and defence.
This week Man of the match goes to Charlie Earls who was back to his combative self.
To round off a busy 7 days we are in action this Saturday at home to Dundalk in the League
