Friday, 17th January saw Carlow host Gorey U13s in a highly anticipated top-of-the-table clash under the lights in the Leinster League, serving as a warm-up for their Southeast semi-final rematch in two weeks. The pitch was in excellent condition on a cool and breezy evening.

**First Half:**
The first half was a tense and evenly matched affair, with both teams perhaps feeling the pressure of the game's importance. The deadlock was broken by a familiar strong run from Andrew, who scored under the posts, with Harry successfully converting the try.

**Second Half:**
After some strong words from the coaches during the half-time break, Gorey returned to the field with renewed focus and confidence. Their improvement was immediately evident, with strong play and intense defensive pressure resulting in a Carlow scrum being won against the head deep in the Carlow half. Eoin followed shortly after with a powerful pick-and-go, smashing over for a score, though the wind denied the conversion.

With the halftime talk still fresh in their minds, Gorey truly elevated their performance. Notable highlights included particularly strong rucking from Thomas and Hugh and a deft offload from Harry, which released Oisin for a try that he converted.

Straight from the kick-off, Thomas claimed the high ball and showcased his impressive stride, scoring a magnificent 60-meter individual try—his celebration becoming a match highlight. The final whistle saw Gorey leading 24-0.

**Final Quarter:**
The last 20 minutes allowed the extended panel some valuable game time. While there were commendable performances from Gorey, their tackling slipped, allowing Carlow to score three tries, converting two.

**Special Mentions:**
- Charlie Earls, Ronan, and Jack Curley for their determination in the last 20 minutes
- Alex and Jack Robins for their tackling prowess
- Sam, Eoin, and Andrew for their high work rate
- Thomas for his Man of the Match effort

**Conclusion:**
It was heartening to see the boys rise to the challenge posed by a strong Carlow team, adjusting and improving their performance in the second half. The rucking and scrums were especially pleasing for the coaches. While not a perfect game, it was a gratifying away win against formidable opposition.

We hope to have some good video footage of the game to aid our training.

**Up Next:**
Away to Boyne for the refixed league game.
