On a cold, wet & windy night Gorey U14s met Enniscorthy under lights for the first time since their Cup Final defeat last season. The boys had a brilliant start with incredible passing, aggressive carries and some beautiful footballing & intercepts from winger Adam Deacon.
Sam Gough got the scoreboard moving with a strong carry and the explosive speed he has become known for. Olly Syme converted to make it 7-0.
Enniscorthy came back very quickly with a breakthrough try from their own half which they converted to bring the scores level finishing the first half.
Gorey came out in the second half with fire in their bellies and they really put their bodies on the line. Charlie Kennedy was on a mission to get over the line and so in a well practised move from a penalty, it was popped out to him and he stormed over the line into the corner to make it 12-7.
Determined to widen the gap between the teams, Gorey showed huge amounts of skill & put Enniscorthy through their paces with some great carries & passing from midfielders, Aidan Brennan & Hugo O Brioin, and turnovers from Jimmy Collier & the forwards who were all playing out of their skin to get the ball to Sam on the wing who got over the line to widen the gap to 17-7.
With a few minutes to go, Enniscorthy came back with a similar approach and despite some great defence on the 5m line, they went over for another try to bring the scores to within 3 points. 17-14
With less than a minute remaining in the game, Enniscorthy looked like they were heading for the try line but Hugh Sherriff, with zero concern for his recently healed collar bone, made a tackle that stopped an almost certain try. Man of the match Donnachadh Kearney was on his heels to put pressure on the ball and it was kicked into touch by Enniscorthy to give Gorey the 4points on the scoreboard to ensure they finished in the top 3 of their division.
Every single one of the boys worked so hard despite the bad weather, they put their heads down and did exactly what was asked of them. They were determined to win and put on a show to be proud of.
Tries : Sam Gough x 2
Charlie Kennedy
Conversion: Olly Syme
The Squad Photo was taken on a day when they could still feel their limbs after the match :)
