The U14 boys hosted Portlaoise at home on Saturday 9th, the teams started off equally matched but once Gorey found their pace there was no stopping them.
Both teams put up a good fight however thanks to clever game play by Tyler Klopper drawing out his opposition and at the perfect time giving one of his famous dummy passes that led to Aidan Brennan securing the first try for Gorey.
The two teams continued to go head to head with Portlaoise managing to secure their first try but this just made Gorey more determined and putting the pressure on in the scrums and showing brilliant technique in the rucks this together with quick passing and strong line break carries kept Gorey on the front foot.
The Portlaoise defence was heavily tested by Gorey and proved effective and brave, holding up second row Tom O’Brien after he battled over the line not once but twice in the space of a few minutes.
Donnachadh Kearney with a strong break managed to help the team gain ground which gave winger Sam Gough the perfect opportunity to make a run for it to put more points on the board.
Both teams now hungry for the win had Gorey putting up a strong defence and working as a team and a push to add more points only allowing Portlaoise one further try and with the help of fresh legs from the Gorey bench, and the long awaited return of last years Captain Hugh Sheriff after suffering a broken collar bone, Gorey managed to add two more tries.
Olly Syme put on an effortless display of technique managing to convert three of his four conversions.
Thanks to Portlaoise and their coaches for travelling for the game and making the boys work for the win..Best of luck to them for the remainder on the season.
