Gorey bounced back from the previous week’s narrow defeat away to Kilkenny with a comprehensive win over a game Cill Dara in Clonattin on Sunday.
The visitors started the brighter as Gorey gave away a number of needless penalties and Cill Dara took full advantage to camp in the home ’22. The Gorey defence held firm as they soaked up continuous pressure.
Eventually Cill Dara were awarded a penalty and out-half Seanan Brannock split the posts. It was no more than Cill Dara deserved as Gorey struggled to get into the game.
From the restart Gorey dominated the territory. They kicked to the corner but the Cill Dara defence held their line, and after sustained pressure Gorey lost their number 8, Jordan Ahern, with a yellow.
Being reduced to 14 men seemed to kick-start the Gorey men and immediately they attacked and ran some great lines.
After forcing the visitors deep into their ’22, continued pressure put Jackie Tully over in the corner and Mark Kehoe converted. Gorey were now piling the pressure on and Isaac Porter went over for a great try again converted by Kehoe after 30 minutes.
Cill Dara’s Brannock added another penalty, but they were soon also reduced to 14 men.
With a minute left to the break, Gorey went in for try number three when Seamus Tomkins touched down for Mark Kehoe to convert and leave the score at 21-6 at half-time.
Cill Dara started well and another Brannock penalty reduced the Gorey lead to 21-9.
But Gorey were soon back on the attack and a number of phases later, out-half Joe Nansen crossed for the bonus point.
The remainder of the half saw Gorey open up, with Nansen pulling the strings as the Wexford men moved the ball at pace.
Further tries from Ewan Stephens, captain Richard Deering and Jack Tully plus a number of Mark Kehoe conversions left the final score at 47-9 to the home team.
Gorey had some fine performances in the pack, with Isaac Porter, Ewan Stephen’s and Kevin Browne showing well. Jack Tully, Mark Kehoe and man of the match Joe Nansen were the pick of the backs.
