The u14 boys travelled to Navan on Saturday to play a well drilled Navan side.
Gorey started strong and they were showing great pace, lovely passing and some strong carries. Navan tried hard to keep them back and even turned over the ball a few times.
After some super defence from both sides the first try was scored by #8 Charlie Kennedy off the back of a scrum in a well practiced move.
Unfortunately the wind took the conversion to the left of the posts.
Buoyed up with a great start, it wasn’t long before winger Sam Gough stormed down the sideline and grounded the ball under the posts so Olly wouldn’t have to contend with the wind to make it another 7 points.
Navan retaliated quickly with a try of their own to make it 12-5 at the end of the first half.
The 2nd half saw Navan coming out with all guns blazing and adding a converted try to their tally evening up the score to 12-12.
The boys continued to fight hard and although the Navan defence was super, the team came together with a great display of passing and handling and scrum half Tyler Klopper managed to cross the line to add another 5 points to the scoreboard.
Olly converted beautifully from an awkward position to the far right of the sticks.
Both teams showed great heart and determination, the defence on display was incredible but unfortunately for Navan, Sam Gough was determined to add to the scoreboard and got in again under the posts which Olly converted with ease.
The boys were on a roll and the teamwork was a pleasure to watch. With only Minutes left Gorey were sure they had sealed the win when Donnachadh Kearney picked from the base of a ruck & after a hard carry, he spread the ball wide where it reached Sam on the wing who ran the tramline & gave a beautiful inside pass to Tyler, running a support line, who then went over for his second try of the day. A dubious, retrospective call from the touch judge ruled that Sam had perhaps had a shoelace in touch so the try was disallowed.
Navan worked hard to gain back ground and couldn’t be stopped when they crossed the line with seconds to go in the match. They converted and the final whistle was blown at 26-19.
Both Navan & Gorey will be nursing some painful muscles tonight after super defence from both teams. Some of the tackles & the rucking wouldn’t have been out of place on the national side, It was a super display of rugby to watch. Every single member of the squad, bar none, had a super game and played their part in the victory.
Tries:
Charlie Kennedy
Sam Gough x 2
Tyler Klopper
Conversions:
Olly Syme x 3
