You don’t need an expensive camera to get a good rugby photo. A few simple things make a huge difference:
- Clean your lens first
Give the camera lens a quick wipe on your shirt. It sounds obvious, but fingerprints cause a lot of blurry photos. - Use the main camera (1×)
Avoid digital zoom where possible. It dramatically reduces picture quality. Get physically closer to the action if it’s safe to do so. - Take photos in LANDSCAPE
Hold the phone sideways. Landscape photos work much better on the club website and give room around the players. - Get closer to the action
A player filling a reasonable part of the picture is much better than a tiny player in the middle of a huge pitch. - Keep the sun behind you
Where possible, have the sun/light behind the photographer rather than behind the players. - Use Burst Mode for action
Hold the shutter/burst control when someone is running, tackling or scoring. Pick the best photo afterwards. - Tap the player on the screen
This tells the phone where to focus and usually improves exposure too. - Anticipate the action
Don’t wait until the tackle or try happens. Start taking pictures just before it. Great rugby photos often happen a fraction of a second earlier than you expect. - Look at the background
Try to avoid bins, cars, spectators or posts appearing directly behind the player where possible. - Send the ORIGINAL photo
This is really important. Avoid screenshots and heavily compressed WhatsApp copies. Send/upload the original full-resolution image whenever possible.
