Gorey made the trip to Wicklow on Sunday for the long awaited South East League final against Tullow.
Tullow made a blistering start and got over in the corner inside the first minute 0-5 . After such a start lesser teams might have folded but the lads have shown tremendous heart, commitment and skill to match all season and the response was unbelievable as for the next twenty minutes Gorey laid siege on the Tullow line.
From the kick off William did superbly to strip the ball in the tackle. Gorey worked the ball through the phases, big carries from James , Charlie and William eventually seen the ball worked out to Joey who kicked though for himself to run onto only to taken out off the ball penalty 5 metres out for Gorey. Emmet took the penalty quickly and fed Fiachra to have a go but Tullow tackled him well, Gorey kept flashing the ball wide, a good carry from Fintan brought us within a couple of metres emmet fed William who powered over to level the scores 5-5.
Gorey's 2nd try was started and finished by Joey, a fantastic run saw Gorey gain 40 metres before he was forced out over the line , Rob did superbly to win the Tullow line out and give Gorey the platform to attack again. Another unbelievable carry from James saw us deep into the Tullow 22, a quickly taken penalty awarded for a high tackle on Harry saw Emmet find William who did well to off load before he went into touch, Fiachra, Charlie, William again and James all had goes at getting over before Emmet passed to Lochlann who fed Ronan, Ronan released Joey who touched down for richly deserved try 10-5.
Gorey just kept coming and got their 3rd try though their captain William who touched down for his 2nd of the game after more good work from Joe ,Charlie and Fiachra, William picked from the back of the ruck to extend Gorey's lead, Fiachra added the conversion to leave the halftime score 17-5
Into the 2nd half and much like the first Tullow started strongly and scored under the posts , the conversion was added 17-12
Gorey responded well and after a sustained spell of pressure around the Tullow 22, Tullow were caught offside, Gorey decided to kick the penalty and Fiachra slotted it over to leave it a two score game 20-12
The game was finally balanced with both teams enjoying spells off possession without really making much ground, until out of nothing Tullow broke from deep to score under the sticks, the conversion was added to leave the bare minimum in it 20-19
In what was a tense last five minutes Gorey knowing that one mistake could cost them the cup dug in deep led by their captain William who’s unbelievable work ethic saw him make tackles all over the pitch, he wasn’t alone do as Charlie, Ronan and Joey all made big tackles to keep Tullow locked in their own half, when they did look like they might get in Fintan made a fantastic tackle on the wing to deny them.
Tullow were now throwing everything at us and could have snatched it a part from a match saving tackle from Mark who done superbly to stop the Tullow winger with one of the tackles off the season full-time 20 -19.
A massive well done to everyone on the panel who have worked tirelessly all year.
The lads go again on Saturday hoping to reach another final when they play away to Cill Dara in the McGowan cup semi final.
