On Sunday Gorey made the trip to Kilkenny for round 2 of the McGowan cup. It was the second time the sides had faced each other in the space of seven days, with Gorey coming out on top 7-5 in the previous meeting.

Gorey were up against a strong wind in the first half, despite this they started well with Mark making a few strong carries. It was Kilkenny do that struck first, getting over in the corner 5-0.

Gorey responded well to this set back and got a try back within 5 minutes, a great move saw Gorey go though the phases, it looked like Joey might get in but Kilkenny shut him down well, Gorey however were not to be denied, a well worked move saw Lochlann find Joe who in turn found William who looked to have put Harry in but again Kilkenny scrambled across to stop him, Gorey kept coming with Charlie and Joe both making good carries then Emmet fed William who showed his strength to hold off the tackle and finish in the corner.

Kilkenny regained the lead right on half time from a quickly taken penalty their no.5 broke though a couple of tackles to run the length off the pitch and in under the posts 12-5 HT

Into the second half Gorey now aided by the wind put on a great show of attacking rugby and it wasn’t long before Joey got over in the corner to cut Kilkenny’s lead to 2pts 12-10, William found Joey out wide, he still had a lot to do but made it look easy outpacing the Kilkenny cover to dive over in the corner.

Gorey continued to put the pressure on and with Joe, Charlie, James and Daniel all excellent in defence Kilkenny struggled to get a foothold in the game, the 3rd try came when Ciaran carried well Emmet then found William who fed James who finished well to give Gorey the lead for the first time 12-15

There was still time for Gorey to add a 4th try, the line out did well to retain the ball and after William had made a few yards the backs produced a move straight off the training ground, Emmet fed Lochlann  who then exchanged passes with Charlie before releasing Ronan who was able to off load to Joey, Ciaran then took over and was unlucky not to get over, quick ball from Gorey give Fiachra the platform to get over, he also added the extras FT 12-22

A big thank you to the referee and to Kilkenny for a fantastic game , also for all the food afterwards.
