On Saturday Gorey made the long drive up to Dundalk for the first round of the 2nd phase of the Leinster league. On a rare dry but cold day Gorey started the stronger and after a good spell of possession where Gorey moved the ball quickly through the phases, sucking the Dundalk defence in, Mark made a good few yards before more quick ball allowed Lochlann to release Joey out wide and none of the Dundalk defenders could catch him. 5-0 to Gorey.
Against the run of play Dundalk's number 10 scored under the posts, he also converted the try to give Dundalk the lead 7-5, Gorey will be disappointed with the manner of the try as they missed a few tackles in the build up. They responded well and after a bit of sustained pressure they regained their lead with a try from scrum half Emmet Tighe who spotted a gap from the back off the ruck and dived over the line, the was good work from William and Fintan to create the chance 7-10 to Gorey.
Gorey third try came from a well worked scrum, Fiachra carried the ball from the back of the scrum and was stopped 5 yards short of the line, Joe was first there to collect the ball and get over the line 7-15 to Gorey. There was still time for Gorey to score their fourth try, Dundalk's kicked clearance was well caught by Fintan who then made good yards, Charlie was next one to take the ball on with a fantastic carry, quick ball from Emmet to Lochlann who flashed it out to Joey, it looked like Joey would get his second try but he was stopped just short, again Gorey kept the ball moving quickly and Daniel got over the line, it was just rewards for Daniel who was excellent all game playing at hooker for the first time, half time 7-20
Into the second half and Gorey continued where they had left off at the end of the first half, Rob did brilliantly to steal a Dundalk line out and Fiachra drove towards the line only to be stopped right on the line, William was next to have a go and he got his reward for all his hard work with an excellent finish in the corner, Fiachra added the conversion 7-27 to Gorey.
Dundalk never gave in and after a good spell off pressure where only a couple of massive tackles from William stopped them getting over, they eventually got the ball wide and touched down in the corner 12-27.
Goreys next try was very much a team effort with Lachlan Joey Charlie and Daniel all involved before a great pass from William that missed out a couple of Dundalk defenders allowing Harry to cross over, again Faicha added the extras 12-34.
The was still time for one more try from Gorey, Harry claimed a clearance from Dundalk, Emmet fed Daniel who made good ground before Rob looked to get over but he too was held up short, Gorey were not to be denied do as James done well to get over to leave the final score 12-39 in Gorey's favour.
Special mention to Mark who worked tirelessly to reach the breakdown all game he also made some important carries, also a shout out to Emmet who had a fantastic game at scrum half making sure Gorey got quick ball, that gave them the platform to attack.
Thanks to everyone that drove the lads up, to Dundalk for a great game and for putting food on for the lads after the game also big thank you to the referee
