On a landmark day for Gorey RFC, the Women’s team marked their long-awaited return to the pitch with a hugely entertaining, evenly contested encounter against a well-coached Greystones side.
Greystones started brightly and struck first, but Gorey hit straight back. Powerful, organised work at the breakdown from the forwards, coupled with sharp handling and real attacking intent from the backs, quickly brought the sides level. From there, the match settled into a high-tempo shootout, with both teams trading scores in a game played with real intensity and spirit throughout.
Gorey’s tries came from captain Abigail Grouse, Player of the Match Alex Byrne, Rebecca Finn, and Kelsie Kennedy— each one the product of sustained pressure and excellent teamwork. It was a superb team display, blending experienced heads with players new to the sport, and the impact of the hard work being put in at training under the guidance of coach Des Dempsey was clear to see.
A special mention to the debutants who played their first ever rugby match, along with the youths stepping up into senior rugby — all of whom contributed with confidence and composure. Their performances underline a very promising future for women’s rugby in Gorey.
After a hard-fought contest played in great spirit by both teams, the final whistle blew with the scores level. For Gorey, however, the day was about far more than the result — it marked the successful return of the women’s side to the pitch and the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the club.
