Saturday 7th February:
A new competition this week, the Leinster Cup. This is a knock-out competition of 5 rounds. Our round 1 match was away against Mullingar Red. The weather was almost sunny, dry and not too cold. The pitch was an all-weather pitch, so there would be no muddy players or jerseys this week.

• 8 minutes later, Mullingar struck back with a try, a good try from short range, to level the match.
• Gorey then got the next 3 tries and conversions, two for Mary and a second for Hannah. The speed and passing of the backs was amazing. This left the score at 7-28 to Gorey.

• Belief boosted the home team, and 5 minutes later they scored again, 33-35, this game was getting very close and tense.
• Almost straight away, Mullingar scored a fourth try in a row, Mullingar had wrestled the lead away from Gorey, 40-35. The momentum was with Mullingar.
• There was 10 minutes left in the match, plenty of time. The team knew if they pulled together, they could still get a win.
• The next try went to Gorey, it was a great team try with runs made by many players and others protecting the ball in the ruck, before Heather broke free on the blind side to out-sprint the defenders and put Gorey back in the lead. A wonderful example of a team try where everyone played a part. Well done!
• 8 minutes to go ……. what would happen next.
• Well …….. after 5 minutes a try by Hannah - a superb run, she rounded the defence to score a try and widen the lead. After the conversion, Gorey had a 9-points lead, which meant the team was now two scores ahead.
• The last score of the game was another try by Mary, who was able to out sprint the defenders to score again.
The final score was 40-54 to Gorey, which looks like a comfortable win, which it certainly wasn’t, but it was a thrilling win. It took great courage, determination, and belief by the team, in the last 10 minutes to fight for each other and come from behind to win the game. WELL DONE TO ALL THE TEAM.
