The third match in Phase 2 of the Leinster League was a 3-hour trip to Birr in county Offaly to play the Ravens. The Ravens are an amalgamated team made from the Birr and Roscrea clubs. The weather was wet and cold and the pitch was heavy and slow. The match was recorded, and the recording helped to get the details for this report.
The main scoring highlights from the match:
• The first score of the match happened after 22 minutes, a try to the Ravens.
• Some super defence by Gorey, a goal line stand at the start of the second half.
• The second score of the match happened after 45 minutes, a try to the Ravens.
• Gorey nearly got a try at about 50 minutes but were stopped just short of the try line.
The final score was 10-0 to the Ravens.
If there were very few scores in the match, you could not say the same for tension and effort in a hard-fought match. The teams were evenly matched. At the rucks, both teams had positives and negatives. Gorey got pinged 9 times for not releasing the ball in their rucks, in comparison this happened the Ravens just 3 times. However, Gorey got 7 jackal turnovers from the Raven’s rucks and while the Ravens had 2 from Gorey rucks. Knock-on’s went Gorey’s way also, Gorey gave up just 8 in comparison to the Raven’s 14, showing that the Ravens did not have an easy win. Gorey also came out slightly ahead in lineouts, as they stole one of the Raven’s lineouts while they won both of theirs. Kicking was even between the two teams, both gaining ground with their kicks.
However, the stat that decides that a game is scores, and the Ravens won that one.
