Saturday 13th December | Clonattin
For their fifth of seven matches in Phase 1 of this year’s Leinster League, the Gorey U16 Girls welcomed ABS (an amalgamated side from Ardee, Boyne/Drogheda and Skerries) on a mild winter Saturday. With injuries, sickness and a school trip leaving Gorey with just 12 players, the girls produced a huge performance in a thrilling, high-scoring contest.
ABS struck first, but Gorey responded brilliantly with four tries on the bounce — Hannah, Mary, Mary and Hannah — to open up a 24–7 lead. The scoring continued at pace from both sides, with Heather adding Gorey’s fifth try of the half to see the home team turn around 31–21 ahead at the break.
The second half was equally end-to-end, with both teams crossing the line repeatedly as the extra space on the pitch made for an open game. Gorey hit the ground running with three quick tries from Hannah, Heather and Rosie, along with conversions, to build a commanding 50–21 advantage. ABS battled back strongly, and a late surge saw the lead trimmed right down to 55–48, but Gorey held their nerve. A superb late score from Hannah, followed by the conversion, sealed a hard-earned 62–53 victory.
Gorey finished with 10 tries to 9, with Hannah also landing 6 conversions. There were strong carries and breaks throughout from Hannah, Heather, Mary, Zoe, Issy, Abbie, Lil and Rachel, backed up by committed tackling, rucking and well-functioning lineouts. A special mention too for the support on the sideline from Liliana, Sarah and Chloe, who were unavailable but there to cheer the girls on.
Next up, Gorey travel to Carlingford next Saturday, kick-off 13:00.
Team: Aisling Rooney, Rachel Harkin, Nicole Kiebasa, Abbie McDonald, Lil Murphy, Issy Maher, Rosie Cooper, Hannah Leacy, Robyn Prendergast, Heather Considine, Mary Butler, Zoe D’Arcy (capt.).
