On Sunday gorey rfc u13 boys welcomed Kilkenny in the south east semi final. The weather was far from ideal as the game kicked off the rain continued to fall, Gorey started strongly and got the try that they deserved with Joey o Sullivan scoring in the corner, the move starting on the opposite side off the pitch when a brilliant off load from William Langrell to James Dunne which allowed Gorey to flash the ball wide with Fionn Morris doing brilliant to draw the Kilkenny tackler before releasing Joey down the wing to touch down, unfortunately Fionn saw his conversion attempt drop short. 5-0

Kilkenny weren’t going to lie down and hit back straight away with a try off their own, from the kickoff a Gorey knock on gave Kilkenny a scum, an opportunity that they didn’t pass up as their number 8 took the ball from the back off the scum to score in the corner the conversion was missed to leave the game 5-5.

Both sides then had spells off pressure with Charlie Jones putting in some big tackles to keep Kilkenny from breaking though and just before half time Gorey made a spell off pressure pay with their second try off the game, some great work from forwards eventually lead to James Dunne getting in beside the posts Fionn Morris converted to leave Gorey leading 12-5.

The was still time for Kilkenny to hit back again when Gorey were penalised for holding on, Kilkenny took a penalty and made a good few yards, Gorey defended well with Ciaran,  Mathew and Rob all putting in big tackles but Kilkenny kept coming  and right on half time they got over there line to register their second try off the game, the conversion was missed to leave the half time score 12-10 to Gorey.

Second half and Kilkenny boosted by the try at the end of the first half started the stronger and continued to ask questions off Gorey, with William, Charlie, Fiachra all impressing in their defensive duties but Kilkenny got their try that they deserved when another quickly taken penalty caught Gorey out and Kilkenny got in under the posts, the try was converted to put Kilkenny ahead for the first time in the game.

Next it was Gorey's turn to apply the pressure but Kilkenny were defending well and despite some big carries from Fiachra and Joey, Gorey were struggling to make ground eventually Gorey got the ball out wide to Harry on the wing but Kilkenny forced him out over the line about 5 meters short of the try line, from the resulting line-out Kilkenny dropped the ball on their own try line and Daniel Kennedy pounced first to score Gorey's third try, Fionn was unable to convert leaving the game level at 17-17, both teams tried to find a winning score but as conditions got worse both teams were guilty off handling errors which made it hard for ether to gain any momentum.

At full time the scores were still level as the game had to be decided on the day and with both teams scoring three tries it came down to first try off the match which was scored by Gorey . It was a cruel way for any team to lose a semi final.

Well done to both squads who played some fantastic rugby in bad conditions, thanks to the referee and to all the parents who supplied food for the players after the game
