Team 1 - 21-24
Team 2 -27-33
Sunday 30th the 14s travelled to Blackrock with 2 teams ,taking them up on their invite to test our teams against a strong and unfamiliar opposition. The 1st game started and our boys seemed a little nervous of the Dublin hotshots, standing off a bit and failing to get decent hits in the tackle.
Nice Gorey pressure and a Harry steal early on was undone by good side to side play from the hosts ending in a try at about 10 mins. 5-0 A big tackle from Jack saved a certain try moments later, but a turnover at the resulting scrum produced another home try.12-0 Gorey upped the pressure and a lovely box kick from Alex saw Harry loose the ball on the try line. We failed to capitalise on some great opportunities, being held up on occasion.
Two mins left in the half, scrum on the 22, and a big pick from the scrum and poor tackling led to a 3rd Rock try. 19-0
The 2nd half started much the same with Blackrock getting another quick try. 24-0
The lads started to find their rhythm, being a little more direct, Andrew putting Rossi in , Gorey having gone close moments earlier. 24-7
A quick penalty from Sam gave go forward ball and Andrew finished the try. 24-14
With the clock in the red sustained pressure deep in Rock territory resulted in a loose ball in goal for Andrew to pounce on and score.
Full time 24-21
Man of the match this week goes to Thomas.
The second match ran alongside the other and played 3_20mins.
This game produced some brilliant performances, giving valuable game time to all and a chance for some to stake their claim on 1st choice positions. A game with plenty of scores and big performances which the boys probably would win any other day. An early burst from Jack set up Rossi for our 1st. Moments later great team play and another powerful run saw Jack score one of his own. A defensive gap opened and Rock took a try back.
Rock came hard again with a big steal from Charlie saving the day on our tryline. Dave put in a good passing and running display at 10 today.
Team spirit was in abundance, the lads all taking on leadership roles and contributing to team talks and decision making.
Gorey scored 3 more through Jack, Conn and Eoin.
Some big carries and even bigger defensive efforts (holding up trys and stopping penalty moves)
from Jack C. earning him man of the match.
Special mention also to Jamie, Darragh and Noah for great performances ,as well as Jeremi who was also immense running Jack a close second for man of the match.
Thanks to Blackrock for the invite, hospitality and the test, hopefully we get to return the favour.
We will learn a lot from today and it's great to get everyone a full game.
Up next Longford away in the final game of this phase of the Leinster League
