Gorey RFC’s U18 Girls made the short trip to Enniscorthy at the weekend and came home with a superb 33–12 Leinster League win after an excellent all-round team performance.
From the kickoff Gorey laid down a marker, dominating the early territory and using their forwards to carry hard around the fringes. Sustained pressure in the Enniscorthy 22 eventually told, with Gorey crossing for the opening try after a series of pick-and-goes. The conversion was added to make it 7–0. Enniscorthy responded with some strong running of their own, but Gorey’s defence was well organised and aggressive, forcing turnovers and penalties. Before half time, slick handling from the Gorey backline produced two more tries out wide, giving the visitors a deserved lead at the break.
The second half started with Enniscorthy on the front foot; their pressure was rewarded with a well-taken try to narrow the gap. Gorey reset, tightened up their breakdown work and began to play the game in the right areas of the pitch with clever kicking and strong counter-rucking. Another brace of Gorey tries – one from a driving maul and another from a turnover and quick counter – pushed the score out of reach.
Enniscorthy never stopped battling and grabbed a late consolation, but Gorey had the final say with a fifth try to seal a 33–12 victory.
It was a real squad performance from Gorey, built on committed defence, smart decision-making and a strong work rate across the park. Coaches and supporters can be hugely proud of the effort, attitude and togetherness shown by this U18 group as they continue their Leinster League campaign.
