The U14 Gorey girls travelled to Athy yesterday for a friendly that turned into a real muddy battle in wet and heavy conditions.
From the first whistle both sides were fully committed, with strong carries, big tackles and plenty of slipping and sliding on a very soft pitch. Athy struck first with some powerful running, but Gorey grew into the game, responding with determined defence and well-worked team tries to keep the scoreboard tight.
The second half was end-to-end rugby, with Gorey showing great heart to fight back every time Athy edged ahead. Smart support play and brave tackling right up to the final whistle kept Gorey within touching distance, but despite a huge late surge they just ran out of time, with the game finishing 25–22 to Athy.
While the result didn’t go Gorey’s way, the coaches and travelling supporters could be very proud of the effort, teamwork and attitude on display. Lots of positives to take forward and great experience in tough conditions for this developing group.
Well done girls! 💚🤍💙
