U14 Boys Match Report
New Ross 14 – 19 Gorey
Sunday 16th November saw Gorey U14 Boys travel to New Ross for a Leinster League clash, with Thomas leading the side as captain. Both teams started with real intent, but a mix of nerves and over-eagerness led to a scrappy opening quarter, with more knock-ons than we’re used to seeing from this group.
A big momentum shift came around the 15-minute mark when Gorey won a scrum against the head. From the resulting platform, captain Thomas powered over for the opening try. Gorey settled after that, and some strong carries from Thomas, Ronan and Hugh laid the foundations for another score, this time Andrew crashing over from centre. Alex added the extras to send Gorey into the break 12–0 up.
About 10 minutes into the second half, Gorey struck again. From a well-worked penalty move, Thomas finished off a clever play to grab his second try of the day, with Alex once more on target from the tee to stretch the lead to 19–0.
New Ross, to their credit, refused to lie down. A scrum penalty gave them field position, and they took full advantage to score a converted try with around 10 minutes remaining. Buoyed by that, the home side came hard again, stringing together a powerful rumble to notch another converted try and close the gap to 19–14 with only a few minutes left.
The closing stages were all about character and defence. Gorey dug deep, making important tackles across the park, and a crucial take of a high ball by an isolated Patch helped relieve pressure and keep Gorey on the right side of the scoreboard at the final whistle.
There were good lessons from the day — defence wins games, and we’ll keep working on staying composed and accurate when opportunities present themselves.
Man of the Match goes to Hugh, a pillar of the team — rock solid in the scrum, strong with ball in hand, and today delivering a dominant defensive display that really stood out.
Next up: Kilkenny at home next week – let’s get a big Gorey crowd out to support the lads! 💚🤍💙
