Saturday 8th November: U16 Girls – Leinster League – Gorey v Seamine
For their second match in this year’s Leinster League, the U16 Girls welcomed Seamine to Gorey. Seamine are a combined team from Seapoint and Coolmine.
The match started on time at midday, and the first half went to plan, just not the Gorey plan. Seamine got 5 tries, while the Gorey attacks ended in turnovers. The Seapoint fly half made good use of the wind at her back with some good kicking, the best being a 50-22. The following lineout resulted in 1 of the tries for Seamine. The halftime score was 0-31 to Seamine. This was obviously disappointing, and the coaches gave an honest assessment to the team in their halftime talk.
The second half started with a try for Gorey; Heather broke through the Seamine line and scored. This was followed by a conversion also by Heather (her first kicking score). The next 10 minutes was all pressure from Gorey, Issy came close to a score, and Rachel got over the line following a scamper down the sideline, but that was ruled out for a foot that touched the sideline as she was clearing the last defender. The pressure paid off though as the ball broke loose behind the Seamine line and Rosie pounced on it for a try.
Five minutes later Heather got her second try, just inside the sideline. The score was now 17-31. The comeback was good, but 3 tries for Seamine in the next 10 minutes put the match beyond doubt. Rosie got a second try, and then Seamine got the last try of the game. In the second half, Gorey scored 22 to Seapoint’s 24. A much better outcome that the first half. But the final score was 22-55.
It was definitely a match if 2 halves, and there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic for the remaining 5 matches in phase 1 of the Leinster League.
Next weekend the team is away to New Ross, kick off is at 19:15 on Friday.
Team: 1 Liliana Gawronska, 2 Amelia Doherty, 3 Isabelle Maher, 4 Isabelle Rolland, 5 Nicole Kielbasa, 6 Lil Murphy, 7 Riana Achari, 8 Abbie McDonald, 9 Rosie Cooper, 10 Heather Considine (captain), 11 Robyn Prendergast, 12 Mary Butler, 13 Leah Kinsella, 14 Rachel Harkin, 15 Cora Dunne, 16 Aisling Rooney, 17 Chloe Murphy, 18 Lilli Cooper, 20 Hannah Leacy.
