On Sunday Gorey welcomed Newbridge for the opening round of the U13 Leinster Junior League, the weather was perfect for the game.
Gorey started the stronger and were awarded a penalty on 2 minutes for a high tackle on Joey o Sullivan, Gorey opted for a shot on goal and Ronan McManus was unlucky to see his attempt drift just to the right.
Gorey continued to enjoy possession but Newbridge were defending well and got giving a respite as Gorey were penalised for coming in from the side, Newbridge decided to run the penalty but Gorey defence stood strong with some big tackles from Charlie Jones and William Langrell, Fiachra Kearney then brilliantly turned over the ball, Gorey flashed the ball out wide and Fiachra was on hand t o touch done in the corner 5-0 to Gorey after 8 minutes, the conversion was missed.
Newbridge responded to this set back really well and started to enjoy good possession in Gorey's half, credit to Gorey they were defending really well with some big tackles from Robert Ireton and Joe Ashmore-Butler. Newbridge continued to try impose themselves and after a great move they nearly got in down Gorey's left hand side but a fantastic tackle by Robert Hempinstall and Jack Kearon forced the Newbridge number 8 over the line, Gorey won the lineout and cleared there lines.
Half time 5-0
Newbridge started the 2nd half on top but Gorey's defence continued to excel, Joe continued to cause Newbridge problems around the rucks getting his hands on the ball to turn it over, from the turnover Harry Murphy who had a great game at fullback found a gap in the Newbridge defence and looked to be on his way but for a great recovery tackle from the Newbridge fullback unfortunately Harry was a bit isolated and conceded a penalty for holding on, Gorey then started to get more off the ball and after some good work from Joey, William and Fiachra, Josh Allen got over the line for Gorey's 2nd try off the game. Fionn Morris converted to give Gorey a 12 - 0 lead.
Both teams emptied their benches and in the closing stages Newbridge got the try that their performance deserved after a good move created space outside and Newbridge got over in the corner unfortunately for them they couldn’t convert.
Full time 12-5 to Gorey well done to both sets off players it was a great game between two very even matched teams. Thanks to Garret Holland for refereeing the game and to parents for supplying food afterwards for both teams.
Thank you to all the people who made the match possible and to our sponsors for their continued support.
