Gorey edged a tight contest by keeping their shape in the final minutes and tidying the breakdown after half-time. Set piece was steady—scrum solid, lineout best on front ball. The 10–12 axis varied depth to draw defenders and free the edge for two of the four tries. Defence settled once the line pressed together with better inside fold; a final goal-line stand forced the key handling error that sealed it.
Restarts improved with staggered receiving pods, and exits were cleaner late on (two carries, then kick to touch), stopping Newbridge from building long pressure sets. Early ruck penalties were reduced as arrivals got lower and earlier, producing quicker ball and denying jackals.
What to bank: composure under pressure, simplified red-zone attack, strong scramble defence.
Coach’s note: “Shape earned the chances; work-rate and discipline finished the job.”
