Saturday 18th October: U16 Girls – Leinster League – Midland Warriors v Gorey
For their first match in this year’s Leinster League, the U16 Girls were away to Midland Warriors, in Moate, Co Westmeath. The team travelled down by bus, with the U14 Girls,
who were also playing the Midland Warriors, at the same time. The Warriors are a new club with this being their first year for the U16 Girls in this competition.

The match started on time at 2pm and within 3 minutes, Abbie had scored a try for Gorey. It was her first score of the year and well deserved. Hannah converted for an early 0-7 lead.

Six minutes later this was followed by a try for Heather and then shortly after by Hannah. Hannah got both conversions for a 21-point lead. For 10 minutes both sides competed well and evenly but in the final 10 minutes of the first half Gorey scored another 3 tries, 2 for Hannah and 1 for Rosie. By halftime Gorey had scored 40 points, by far the team’s best half of the year so far.

In the second half, Gorey got 3 tries, one each for Hannah, Heather and Chloe, who was playing her first ever rugby match; well done Chloe. Unluckily, Ellen was tackled bravely to deny her a score. Towards the end, the Warriors had 2 close scoring chances, the first a run down the sideline that Hannah sprinted across to cover and tackle the player over the sideline. The other chance being a penalty kick from about 30 meters out which was a good effort and almost scored. This final score was 0-55 to Gorey.

Well done to all the players on a super performance. Having lost our first match by a similar score, it was great to see this progress, and what’s learnt in training being put into practice.

Great too to have the injured players (Robyn, Lil, Lilli, Ella and Aisling) travelling to support the team. Also, well done to the U14 girls and the U16 boys who were also playing the Warriors in Moate, both winning. And thanks Kersee for organising the travel. And finally, thanks to the Midland Warriors for their warm welcome and hospitality, it’s not easy getting a new rugby club started, we wish them well.

Next weekend the team is away to play the Rhinos in Tullow, in their final match of phase 1 of the South-East League.
