On Saturday 18th October 21 under 14 girls left Gorey to travel by bus with the U16 girls to Midland Warriors in Moate for their matches that coincided with each other. Arriving in Moate as the under 16 boys finished their match with a win, both girls teams wanted to continue the winning for the club.
With a 2pm KO, ref and coach Mervyn Bailey blew the whistle with our number 10 Darcie Bailey kicking the ball into the Midland Warriors half and against the wind where they stayed until the 5 minute mark when Ciara Nagle Goreys number 9 went over for the first points of the game. Midland Warriors kicked off with Gorey taking the ball before Warriors turned it over running towards the try line only for Gorey number 6 Elly Rynhart Kenny holding up the ball for a goal line drop out.
Between the 15 and 19 minute mark Warriors managed to cross for 3 tries with 2 of them being converted. With about 2 minutes left in the first half and Gorey trailing 19 - 5 , Gorey number 5 and player of the match Caoimhe McCann went over for a try. Within a minute Áine Crehan, Goreys 15 was running up the wing and just as she reached the try line Warriors got her foot into touch, lineout to Warriors. Just on the cusp of half time Goreys number 3 Jessie Milligan Huzevkova went over. HT Warriors 19 Gorey 15.
Second half kicked off with Gorey receiving the ball and playing with the wind. With Gorey only trailing by 4 points it was all to play for. Long periods of the 2nd half spent in the Gorey half with Gorey's defense playing an integral part, handling errors and offsides all played a part with Gorey holding Warriors out and eventually getting back into Warriors half, this lead to Gorey Captain and number 12 Rosie Ryan going over for a try and Darcie converting it. MW 19 GOREY 22.
Simultaneously to Áine being put into touch in the first half Sophie O'Connor, Gorey's number 14 managed to prevent a try and getting MW ball carrier into touch. Lineout to Gorey, onto MW side, before it could be picked, Gorey kicked the ball, it scrambling and going into touch off a MW player, lineout to Gorey. Although back in Gorey's half they defended well and eventually it paid off as they made their way back into Warriors half.
A few injuries and subs made for Warriors gave Gorey a quick rest to catch their breath. Scrum to Gorey as they were in possession of the ball when play stopped. Gorey made their way towards the line before losing the ball to Warriors. Fortunately a mistake from Warriors meant Gorey had the ball back, final whistle was imminent, coaches shouting to get the ball off the pitch but Gorey decided to go for one more and in the chaos Amelia Lacey, Gorey number 13 went over for a try with Darcie converting.
Final whistle went with Gorey taking 2 from 2 victories in their quest in the Leinster League. A hard fought game that ended with the result they deserved. Final score Midland Warriors 19 GOREY 29 💙🤍💚.
