On Saturday 20th of September our under 15 boys hosted Wexford RFC in round 3 of the Southeast League. The rain was pouring in Gorey but the pitch was in great condition, holding well and the lads took full advantage.

The opening minutes of the game set the tone with Gorey hungry for possession, attacking the ruck and carrying with aggression. It took only 4 minutes for prop Morgan Corbett to open the scoring by powering over the line after a great display of forwards play. (5-0)

Some great link-up play between forwards and backs saw centre Aidan Brennan cut a beautiful running line to add another five with Olly Syme slotting the conversion.  (12-0)

Wexford returned fire with several attacking phases of their own, capitalising on a penalty ten meters from the Gorey line by tapping quickly and crashing over under the posts, snatching seven points of their own. (12-7)

Centre Adam Deacon widened the gap at the fifteen minute mark after winger Ryan Kenny chased his well placed kick and recycled from contact to put Adam over in the corner. (17-7)

Winger Sam Gough showed his trademark speed again when he was set loose down the outside and scored after flanker Jimmy Collier turned over a ball at the ruck, with Olly again tagging on the extras. (24-7)

For the final minutes of the first half Gorey hemmed Wexford inside their own half and applied huge pressure with dominant tackling and ferocious competition at the ruck which eventually paid off as Wexford spilled the ball forward inside their 22.

No.8 Donnachadh Kearney spotted his opportunity and took it, picking from the base of the solid scrum and crossing the line down the narrow side with several Wexford defenders still in tow. Olly had a lot to do off the tee but made sure of it to add the extra two points. (HT 31-7)

The second half saw sweeping changes to the Gorey line-up, the weather deteriorate but the intensity remain the same with Adam scoring his second of the day from the out-half position this time. (36-7)

Some super passages of play, sound defence  and great communication between the lads aided by some lovely kicking for territory saw to it that Wexford stayed pinned back for the majority of the half.

When Wexford attempted to kick to ease the pressure they made the fatal mistake of sending it skyward in Sam’s direction. After a very difficult fielding, Sam scorched down the wing for his second try of the day to close out the game 41-7.
