🔵⚪🟢 Gorey RFC Senior Men Open Season with Narrow Defeat in Wicklow Friendly 🔵⚪🟢
Gorey RFC’s senior men’s team kicked off their 2025 season on Saturday with a home friendly against Wicklow RFC. The game got underway at 3:00 pm, preceded by a heartfelt moment of applause to remember Aidan Kelly – a respected figure in the rugby community.

First Half – Gorey in Control
From the start, Gorey showed real intent, dominating possession and territory throughout the opening half. The forwards carried strongly, while the backs moved the ball well to stretch the Wicklow defence.
✅ The first try came after 11 minutes when Eoin Walsh spotted a gap and scored from a quick tap penalty.
✅ Just five minutes later, John Milne finished off an excellent attacking move for Gorey’s second try.
Both were converted, giving Gorey a 14-0 lead at halftime. They almost added a third just before the break, but a knock-on five metres out denied them.

Second Half – Wicklow Fight Back
The second half saw Wicklow take control as both sides made changes. Their scrum-half scored soon after the restart, narrowing the gap to 14-7. With 10 minutes left, Wicklow’s number 8 powered over from the back of a scrum (conversion missed) to make it 14-12.
Late drama came when Wicklow earned a penalty near the Gorey 22. Their out-half slotted it to give them the lead for the first time at 14-15, which they held until the final whistle.
