It was a fabulous spring day as the U16 girls travelled to Tullamore for the Quarter Final of the Leinster League premiership level.
The first half started with knock-on to Gorey from the kick-off. From the scrum Aoibhin fought her way to the Tullamore try line but was stopped just short. After some more pressure from Gorey, Tullamore got their hands on the ball, passed the ball out wide and broke the line and the back-row player had the pace to run all the way to score a try. Five minutes later there was a similar break by their scrum-half to score under the post, score 12-0 to Tullamore. A third line-break was stopped by Heather who tripped the runner as she attempted to dodge by. More pressure on the Gorey try-line was eased as Aoife and Jessicia held-up a player attempting to ground the ball. Zoe then brought to ground a runner who looked to be clear through. A penalty to Gorey in the opposition 22 ended-up being turned over, that score would have brought the team back into the match.
The half ended with 2 tries for Tullamore, the last one from 2 good kicks and chases. At half time the score was 24-0 to Tullamore.
The second half started with a score to Gorey from the kick-off, the move ending with a great run by Aoibhin who stiff-armed the last defender to score under the posts. Emer knocked over the conversion to get 7 points on the board. There were no scores in the next 10 minutes. But it was Tullamore who got the next try, and then another and then another; game over. A penalty to Gorey 5 meters short of the Tullamore try line was superbly run-in by Amy for a try. Tullamore got 1 more try and conversion to leave the final score at 50-12.
It was a disappointing end to the run in the Leinster League, but out of 26 teams that competed in the competition in their age bracket, they were in the top 6, which is something to be proud of.
