The team travelled to Old Belvedere in Dublin for the second round of the Leinster Cup, after last week’s win against Barnhall.
The game started with Gorey camped in the Viper’s half, but the Vipers struck first off a break down the wing to open the scoring 7-0. After 6 minutes Gorey levelled the scores with a try from Ciara and a difficult conversion from Amy. There were strong runs by Gorey, Orla was stopped just short of the try line and Aoibhin got over the try line but judged “held-up”.
The Vipers then had another break down the wing to score again. The final score of the half was from the Vipers to leave Gorey behind but still in touch at 17-7.
The second half started with an exchange of tries, first the Vipers and then Aoibhin for Gorey got tries; when Emer kicked over the conversion the score was 22-14 to the Vipers. At this stage the game was very much in the balance but over the next 15 minutes, the Vipers got 3 unanswered tries to put the game beyond the Gorey. In the final 10 minutes, Gorey pulled back 2 tries, first with Aoibhin storming over with a conversion by Emer and then Heather who ran a great support line to score after Aoibhin was stopped just short of the line. The final score was 41-26 to the Vipers.
It was a disappointing outcome, even though there was some great play and the team played their hearts out. Player of the Match went to Ellen for her tireless efforts in attack and defence.
