The team travelled by bus to Tullamore for their first match of phase 2 of the Leinster League. From Phase 1 the team earned qualification for the premiership level for phase 2, which is the top tier with the best teams in Leinster.
It was cold day and a cold start in Tullamore; Tullamore scored straight from the opening possession. They scored again from the next possession; on the next possession the Tullamore grip on the game was finally broken by a super jackal turnover by Orla. After some good runs, the girls were turned over just short of the Tullamore line which frustratedly lead to another Tullamore score. There were some moments of good play, like Emer winning back her own kick-off, and good tackling from Amy, Aoibhin, Ciara, Orla, Lily, Mia and others, but the half completely got away from them and the halftime score was 43-0.
“Motivational” words in at halftime followed and the second half was a different story. Aoibhin powered over for a try, then Ciara broke through to score with Emer getting the conversion. Aoibhin got a well-earned second try and near the end of the match Dearbhail showed great strength and determination to break free from 2 tackles while avoiding the touchline to break through and score her first try. Tullamore got 2 tries and a drop-goal in the second half which meant the girls outscored the opposition in the second half 22 to 17. But the damage from the first half meant the final score was 60-22 to Tullamore.
It was great that the girls showed determination, didn’t let their heads drop and fought to the bitter end. The second half showed the team could fight and be competitive.
Gorey Player of the Match went to Dearbhail which was well deserved.
