After a 3-week break, the U16 girls welcomed Greystones for their Leinster League clash.  Coming into the match, it looked like a win today would secure Gorey a place in the top tier for phase 2.  With the sun peaking out during the match, the weather conditions were balmy for November.  A minute’s silence was observed before the match for a former Greystones player, Grace Rush.

The first half was low scoring but keenly fought. Greystones had a slight advantage in terms of possession, though the scoring chances favoured Gorey with 2 breaks ending in super try saving tackles from Greystones, foiling first Ciara and then Heather.  Greystones scored first after 23 minutes, and then with the last play of the first half Aoibhín replied for Gorey with a terrific run. All even 7-7 at half time.   

The second half started with an attack by Greystones which was ended by a finger-tip interception by Amy who sprinted the length of the field to score; (14-7). Seven minutes later Aoibhín scored with a fabulous break through the center (21-7). Greystones scored their second try bringing the score back to 21-14 before Emer scored a try and then, after a steal in the scrum and some good passing by the backs, Ciara (in the photo) broke through to score.  Greystones showed good fight and got 2 tries to close the gap to 31-24.   Aoibhín scored the last try leaving the final score at 36-24 to Gorey. Well done Emer and Amy on the conversions.

There were 2 tries in the first half, and 8 in the second; but both halves were engrossing with the 2 teams contributing to a super match; well played Greystones.  For the first time this year, a Gorey Player of the Match was awarded; it went to … Ciara. Well done Ciara and all the players and subs.

Next Saturday the team are travelling over to Mullingar for the final match of Phase 1 in the Leinster League.
