Gorey U16 girls travelled down to Wexford on a cold night under floodlights for their Leinster League clash.
It was an absorbing match that swung one way and then the other. It was a physical match with strong runs and heavy tackles. Both sides displayed allot of grit and determination not to lose. There was 2 tries in the first half, Heather from the back of a ruck getting over the line for the first score of the year for the younger girls and Aoibhin breaking through tackles to score. Twice Wexford were camped on the Gorey line but were denied by a jackal turnover and a knock-on. The half time score was 0-12 to Gorey, which was a good return on the first half.
The second half started in a similar fashion with Aoibhin, off the back of a scrum, breaking tackles again to score a super try and then Heather, running a support line on the wing, got the ball and was chased by three Wexford defenders over half the length of the pitch to score. Emer got 2 conversions in the match, which left the score at 0-24 to Gorey. In the last 20 minutes Wexford showed fight and determination by scoring a first, second and then third try pulling the score back to 15-24. And as the match approached its end, they got a fourth try, but all the Wexford conversions were wide of the mark leaving the final score at 20-24 to Gorey. In a tight game, the 2 Gorey conversions were the difference on the score-board.
It was a hard-fought win for Gorey, well done all :) I’m sure this report hasn’t done justice to all the girls who played their heart out. The physicality took its toll with injuries for Emma, Amy, Orla and Lily, which the subs filled in for. Great to see the injured Sarah and Sierra supporting their team-mates. Next Saturday the team are travelling over to Portlaoise.
