A bright and windy autumn day in Gorey was the setting for U16 Girls Team 1st Leinster League match of the season, and Athy were welcomed to Gorey.
The match got off to blistering start with Aoibhin going over for a try on the first possession; both the forwards and backs contributed to the drive made it a great team try. In the next possession, there was a response from Athy as they scored a try; and then another three minutes later. Two super tries from Amy followed, one direct form a kick-off, before Athy got one back. Three tries a piece so far, who could score the most ? But the first half ended well for the girls, with tries for Amy, Emer, Aoife and Ciara. At half-time the score was 45 – 17 to Gorey.
In the second half, both Gorey and Athy got 2 tries, Emer and Amy scoring for Gorey. The strong cross wind made conversions difficult, but Emer and Amy got 5 super conversions.
The winds also made line-outs tricky for both sides. With Emma, Sara, Zara and Siera on the injured list, there was only 2 subs available today and Ellen and Liliana were needed as there was plenty of bumps and sore bodies through-out the match.
It was a super day for the backs with some strong running and scoring for Amy, Emer, Aoibhin and Ciara; Heather was in constant support and Zoe did some top class off-loads and tackles. The forwards also played their heart out, stopping a continuous stream of strong runs from Athy.
Well done all the team on a great win against a good team. Next weekend we’re travelling down to Wexford for round 2.
