U14 boys met Wicklow under lights at home in Gorey on Monday evening.

3 weeks ago, the boys had travelled to Wicklow and beaten them so it was a hungry Wicklow team who turned up seeking the win.

Gorey were first off the mark with a try between the posts from winger Sam Gough and converted by Olly Syme 3 minutes into the game.

Wicklow countered almost immediately with a return try making it 7-7. A few minutes later, Wicklow scored 2 tries in quick succession despite the Gorey defense being strong and Wicklow players being driven back and held up on their own line.

At 19-7 down, Gorey came back into the game when Sam made a run the length of the pitch and despite the best efforts of Wicklow, they couldn’t keep up to him. He went over the line under the posts and Olly slotted over the extra 2 points to narrow the score line going into HT.

Wicklow came out in the 2nd half and scored their 4th try, leaving Gorey trailing 26-14. But Sam Gough had clearly had his Weetabix and made another run from his own 22 to add another 5 points to the board and Olly made it 7.

At 26-21, the comeback was on and with 2 mins to go in a nail biting match, replacement number 8 Charlie Kennedy broke off the back of the scrum and carried over the line into the corner.

With the teams now on 26-26, all eyes were on Olly who had an awkward conversion to bring Gorey ahead. Calm under pressure, Olly nailed the kick and ref Jenny Foley blew the final whistle. Gorey 28 - 26 Wicklow.

Tries: Sam Gough x 3
