A superb kicking performance from Mark Kehoe earned Gorey a hard earned victory over DLSP on Sunday last.
Gorey kicked off the new season in Division 1B with a home fixture and after what seemed like a long preseason Head coach Joe Duffy and backs coach Darren McGrath were delighted to get the lads out on the field and quietly confident that their team was ready for the task ahead and hopefully secure a vital home win in their opening game.
But it was the visitors who started the brighter and within minutes opened the scoring with a penalty. They were looking the sharper and a fantastic back move saw an incredible last ditch tackle in the corner by Gorey outhalf Joe Nansen hold the Gorey line.
The Gorey response was almost immediate with a Mark Kehoe penalty.
Straight from the restart as Gorey tried to clear their 22 the kick was blocked down and the second row touched down as the ball bounced favorably. Conversion taken and the score was 10 3.
On twenty mins Kehoe added a further penalty 10 6
DLSP soon added another penalty to extend their lead to 13 6. But they had been warned after a number of high tackle penalties and the inevitable yellow card appeared.
Gorey ramped up their effort and a long range penalty from Kehoe hit the post and from that the home team camped in the visitors 22 for captain Richard Deering to touchdown. Mark Kehoe drew the sides level and minutes later put Gorey into the lead with another penalty with the break just around the corner. 16 13 at the break.
The second half saw Gorey open the scoring and a penalty to the corner and the resulting lineout saw Gorey drive for the line for Kevin Browne to get the ball to the line again Kehoe split the posts.
Gorey introduced seasoned second rowers Darragh O Leary and Isaac Porter and prop Eddie Downes and they immediately made an impact with further extended pressure producing an excellent try when Brian O Leary finished off out wide for Mark Kehoe to land the conversion.
A further Kehoe penalty left the final score at 33 13 to the home side after an excellent game between two teams that tried to play an open game throughout.
